  Overview
As the eight largest city of Spain, Alicante is a compact seaside town with a luxuriance of modern resort facilities as well as a wealth of historical attractions which make a stop to this lovely seaport very exhilarating.  It offers a refreshing alternative to most other Spanish coastal resorts although visitors can certainly find plenty of pulsating nightlife, delicious local cuisine and a wide range of activities to indulge in this city.  Come and bask in the charming atmosphere of Alicante and you may end up discovering your latest favorite holiday destination.

History
The first settlers of Alicante were the Greeks who founded the city in 324 B.C.  It was captured by the Romans in 201 B.C., and later fell under the Moors' domination from 718 - 1249 A.D.  The Christian monarchs' move to recapture Spain had resulted in the reconquest of Alicante in 1265 by Alfonso X of Castile.  During the reign of Aragon, it was incorporated into the kingdom of Valencia in the year 1304.  Alicante suffered a siege by the French in 1709 and 1812, and later by the Federalistst of Cartagena in 1873 where much of the city was destroyed.  During the Spanish Civil War, Alicante was one of the last cities to submit to Franco.  Today Alicante is the second largest province of the Valencia region and thrives on a lively tourism industry.

Geography & Climate
The Alicante province borders the coast of the Mediterranean Sea and sits directly south of Valencia.  It is part of the Valencia Autonomous Community and also part of the Costa Blanca resort chain.  The climate is Mediterranean with generally mild temperatures throughout the year.  Rain is generally scarce except in the mountainous northern sector.
