Getting there & away

Air
Alicante's airport is El Altet International Airport (ALC) which is 10 km away from the city center.
It receives domestic charter flights from other major Spanish cities as well as European cities including London, Paris and Rome.  There are constant bus services from the airport to the Plaza del Mar southwest of the city center.  Alternatively, you can also take a taxi from the airport.

Train
Alicante's main train station is located on the Avenida de Salamanca s/n in the city center and is run by the state-owned company RENFE.  There are trains from Madrid, Seville, Barcelona and Valencia City to this station daily.  At present, there is a plan to establish a high-speed train to connect Madrid, Valencia and Alicante together which is estimated to be in operation in 2007.  For train schedule or online train booking, check out RENFE's website at http://horarios.renfe.es/hir/ingles.html.  If you are coming from France, it may be worth getting a France 'n Spain pass from Eurail which offers unlimited travel throughout France and Spain under a specific time period.

Alicante's second train station (narrow gauge railway station) is located on the harbor and is run by FGV (Ferrocarils de la Generalitat Valenciana).  This is an important line for local connections between cities along the Costa Blanca such as Denia, Altea, Calpe, and Benidorm.

Bus
Alicante's bus station is located in Calle Portugal close to the harbor and receives several regional as well as long-haul buses from other Spanish cities such as Granada, Madrid, Barcelona and Almera daily.  There are also a variety of different bus companies operate from this station and offer connections to all over Spain.

Car

You can get to Alicante by car, on the A-7 motorway from the French border.  The national route N-340 links Alicante to Barcelona and Valencia City.

Getting around

Alicante has many pleasant avenues for visitors who prefer to explore the city on foot to absorb the atmosphere.  However, there are also extensive bus services and taxis if you want to visit places further away from the center.
