The Mystery of Elche is Alicante's religious celebration which is held annually during the middle
of August.  On the occasion, the locals put on a performance about the Assumption of the Virgin in the Transito Basilica.  It is sure to be a theater and music fans' delight and the fact that the play is elaborately organized by the dedicated non-professionals can give the audience a truly moving experience.

Moros y Cristianos
Every late April, Alicante celebrates the Moros y Cristianos with all the exuberance and vigor the city can muster.  There are parades, displays, street concerts and dances as well as great feasts throughout every neighborhood to commemorate the Christian victory over the Moorish troops of al-Azraq.  Definitely one of the special events worth witnessing in Alicante.

Hogueras de Sant Joan
This annual celebration of the bonfires of St.John every 24th June was declared an official celebration in 1928.  It coincides with the summer solstice celebration with lots of open-air dances, parades, and the lighting of bonfires to honor Saint John.  The celebration includes the Floral Offering to the Virgin de los Remedios on the 22nd of June, then the international folklore parade on the 23rd of June, and concludes with the 'Bonfires' on the night of the 24th of June.

Carnival
Held annually on the weekend and days leading up to Ash Wednesday, the Carnival is another important national celebration which is observed with passion and enthusiasm in Alicante.  The whole town is lavishly decorated for the event.  On Saturday, called Sábado Ramblero, there are parades down Rambla Avenue featuring carnival costumes, ending with a festivity called the “Funeral Wake and Burial of the Sardine”.

Virgen del Carmen (The Blessed Virgin Mary of Mt Carmel)
As an important seaport, Alicante's sailors honor their patroness by holding the Virgen del Carmen celebration every 16th of July.  The event includes the decoration of fishing boats and other vessels as well as a fabulous sailor's procession.
